DONCASTER CHRIST CHURCH

Amazing architectureSpectacular stained glassInteresting churchyard

Christ Church is the home of Reachout Christian Fellowship, a group of Christians affiliated to the Assemblies of God denomination. Our aim is to see the Christ Church facility used to develop the Christian community and to extend the Kingdom of God and make it a place where all are welcome.

During the early 19th century the population of Doncaster increased markedly and in 1827 an Act of Parliament was passed enabling the erection of Christ Church as a new parish church. The site chosen was a former sand and gravel working. The church, built to a neo-Gothic design in Roche Abbey stone, was opened for worship on 1st November 1829. Congregations continued to increase and in 1856 the church was enlarged by construction of a chancel at the east end, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The original spire was made of stone, but was shattered by lightning in 1836. It was replaced by a new copper clad spire in 1939.

Over the years the fabric of the building deteriorated and in 1989 repair and restoration costs were considered too great for the existing congregation and Christ Church became a redundant church. It was bought in 1994 by Reachout Christian Fellowship and ten years later opened again for worship on 4th December 2004.

Features of note in the Church include vibrant stained glass windows created by the Belgian Jean Baptiste Cappronier during the period 1863 1865.
